GRADUATION NUMERACY ASSESSMENT (GNA) The Numeracy Assessment is a new provincial assessment and a graduation requirement for students. Students may take the assessment three times, and retain the best score (1 to 4). The result will appear as its own line on student transcripts.
November 7, Grade 12 students will have the opportunity to re-take the test (or take it for the first time). Next January or June, all Grade 11s will take the test for their first attempt at the end of their math course. How will it work?
The assessment itself is delivered online and has three essential components:
•Common component: 24 questions answered online by all students •Student-choice component: 2 long-answer questions answered on paper. These questions stem out of the information and work the student will have completed in the common component. Students get to pick 2 of 4 possible questions, based on their interest, and take their analysis deeper.
•Self-reflection component: answered online (not marked) There are also pre-assessment activities available for stu-dents to explore ahead of time and activate their thinking, such as the sample assessment and the collaborative-learning videos explaining the five numeracy processes students will use in the Numeracy Assessment.

Please see the helpful videos below for a way you can access your transcripts and other information.
You can send transcripts directly to yourself, post secondary, or employers electronically.

Message to Parents:
School District No. 85 is going through district wide telephone upgrades. Many phones in the buildings are not operational. Office phones are in working order. Thank you for your patience during this upgrade.
Dear Parents and Guardians:
We are all looking forward to seeing our students return on Wednesday, September 5th, 2018 at 8:50 a.m. until 12:30 a.m.
Students will be attending their homeroom to receive copies of their schedules and locker assignment, attend a brief assembly, and then run through a rotation of their classes. Thursday, September 6th will be a regular school day, with classes starting at 8:50 a.m. and finishing at 3:25 p.m.
Your son’s/daughter’s timetable for the 2018-2019 school year will be mailed home before the end of August. It will also be given to them first thing Wednesday morning in their homeroom. Teachers will also be letting students know what specific school supplies will be needed during the first week of classes.
Many factors go into scheduling students, including the choices students made on their course selection sheets, teacher availability, and province wide mandated composition requirements. We are excited to be able to maintain our academic course offerings, offer new courses, and maintain many elective options at our school. The 2018-2019 school year also continues with redesigned K–9 curriculum and will be transitioning to the new 10-12 curriculum. More information can be located at https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/
Information about busing and other school schedules and transportation can be found at: http://www.sd85.bc.ca/?page_id=130
We hope we have answered most questions you may have, but if not, please feel free to call the school between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. If you wish to discuss your son’s/daughter’s timetable, please contact the school at 250-956-3394 or niss@sd85.bc.ca to make an appointment with our advisor, Ms. Nina Mitchell.
We are looking forward to another vibrant year of learning at North Island Secondary School.
Yours truly,
Mr. J. Dixon
